KAP

One of my friends is a serious RC person and offered to make up a KAP rig using some of his spare servo parts...

Any friendly advice from those who have done this?

I already sent him several links to KAP sites..

Chris, looks like we will have some KAP trials on our Sunday outings soon..

Have you guys had any luck? I built a rig and it seems luck is not on my side. I hade the rig at Mots on Saturday, no wind. I have yet to let it fly...

I would recommend choosing your servos carefully. If you are using a heavy camera you may want to consider using a metal gear servo for the tilt axis. On the flip side, if you are using a very light camera you may want to consider using micro servos. They are much smaller and lighter. You can customize your rig any way you wish with the number of servo options that are out there today.

Anyone considering getting into KAP should, at least, consider getting Brooks Leffler's basic rig kit. It has everything you need, except the servos and radio, to build a (very very good) KAP rig. You can find all you need at : http://www.brooxes.com/

Personally, I am looking at building an ultralight rig over the winter by researching and using the lightest components possible. We'll see how that goes. I'll share my findings in the future. I am excited by the recent technologies in lightweight batteries.

I would like to get together with other KAPers in the IKE area for a fall colors KAP excursion. Anyone interested? I'm game.

Maybe we should start another thread to suggest locations and dates?

Hey thanks for the reply, I did get the rig from Brooxes. IT works great, but every time I gop to use it I go on day there is low wind.

I think I posted a picture of it in my gallery. I am currently using a 19' delta to carry it. I think it is alot of overkill. I need to make or buy a 6' or 8' ROK. any suggestions?

I have a RC set from ebay and it seems to work well with my 3mp digital.

I would be interested in getting together for some KAP sometime...

lwinfrey - Excellent. You really can't go wrong with Brooxes kit.

The KAPer who inspired me to put my expensive camera on a string and dangle it hundereds of feet in the air was Craig Wilson from Madison, Wisconsin. Craig uses various sizes of delta kites to lift his rig. He has them in all sizes - all the way up to his 20 foot wingspan monster. He understands the need for tails or even inverted triangles of fabric to create enough drag to keep the kite from overflying in heavier wind conditions. Deltas have a large area of lift and are efficient flyers. Too efficient in my opinion. So I opt for another solution which doesn't take so much work. BTW, If you are interested in some great KAP images but don't have Craig's book in your library - you need to get it ASAP. His book is "Hanging by a Thread" and can be found on Amazon.com.

My choice for KAP kites are my Rokkakus. I have a 6 footer which I was using at Mots on Sunday and an 8 footer which comes out to play in lighter winds. I like my 8 footer - this one is my workhorse. It comes out of the bag most often. Roks don't need a tail and can be tuned for most every wind condition. When they lose lift they typically drop straight back down the window and can be eased into a controlled landing almost every time. I like that.

I also use a Flowform 30 and a Flowform 60 for portability or extra lifting. However, they can become overpowered then dive and loop. The rig doesn't like the ride and usually causes some problems. These aerobatics are few and far between and the Flowforms tend to behave well in normal wind conditions. One caution, they do much better with a tail which provides enough drag to keep them pointed into the wind.

One small note on radios... get a FM radio. I started out with an AM radio and finally replaced it with an FM radio as there was waaayyy too much interference with the AM radio. It would cause my camera to fire unpredictably and cause my tilt servo to jitter something awful. :lol:

Hello all,

New member here but not new to KAP. I am no Chris Benton, Craig Wilson or Brooks Leffler but I have been KAPing on and off for about 7 years. I hope to attend the Naperville event on Sunday. My son has a travel soccer game in Berwyn with a time yet to be announced. If I am able to come, I will likely be flying a Sutton Flowform 30 or an American flag inspired Rok.

Cool! Welcome to the club George. If I see that Sutton Flowform I'll be sure to wear a hat to cover my bald spot--wouldn't want to mess up your photo :-D

And here I was, afraid that my bag of 7 revs might give me away! lol..

I don't fly often over at the firehouse as the wind has to be coming out of the south to make it right but I have been so frustrated flying at IMSA with the wind from the west that just by a fluke did I decide to go over there... Then as I drove up I saw your sutton in the air and you hanging a rig and I literally cracked up laughing and figured that you would be surprised if someone asked if you were KAPing since most anyone else wouldn't have a clue what it was really called... you did a double take when I asked...lol

Since Aurora seems to be so dry of fliers, I seriously enjoy it when I run into someone who does... and there are even less KAPers so it was a very pleasant surprise..

Now the real question.... did you get any good shots? Post em if you got em! Every member has a personal gallery here on the forum. Just click on Album up at the top and go to your personal album... Some of the guys also use Flicker and post links to their pics here...
