are competition fliers? We are all in region 6 and we have but next to no competitions this season. I am trying to get some sort of idea as to just how many people we have in the competitive pool. Please reply somewhere and make yourself known. J

Howdy,
I thought you were going finish the subject line with "...does is take to screw in a lightbulb"

I saw your post over at GWTW as well.
As far as I know, none of our regular posters are competition fliers. If more people saw competition there may be more interest.
We'll see, the club is still growing. Perry Farms is the only Illinois comp that I'm aware of.

Only one, but he has to wait a month because he ordered it from KiteBuilder.com

One, if he's a rev flier and he can do it from 120' away.

Zero (infinity?) if they are dual-line fliers. Dualies can't do it 'cause they're all about tricks and no precision! :rotfl

all in good fun, you know I love you dualies :P

outsidetheboxkitestudio,

My apologies for almost hijacking the thread...

I don't compete. I realize that is exactly some folks cup of tea, but putting that pressure on kiting would make it work instead of fun for me. As soon as I make kiting a job, I'll quit kiting.

Good luck finding some friendly competition here!

Be well,
Dan

Mr. OutsideDbox is an excellent dual line trickster; i'm glad to see him here. He makes and sells his own superb dual line kites (has online movie footage of his flying) and i've met him more than once at the Indiana Trick Clinic and at Perry Farm. Hi Jason!

As you well know, i'm not at all interested in competition... though not through any lack of skill, however. i'm with ZippyD on this... plus i feel that we are, in truth, all one... so who would i compete against?... myself? i remember in grade school, how our teacher asked us to cut out a paper kite, one for each of us; she put them on a bulletin board... and whoever learned his or her multiplication tables better would get to raise his or her kite to a certain height. i refused to learn my multiplication and told the teacher that her silly kite thing was absurd; i wasn't going to fly anything higher than my friends.

1x1=1

excerpt from Emily Dickinson:

One and One--are One--
Two--be finished using--
Well enough for Schools--
But for Minor Choosing--

Will some of you guys be at Grand Haven?... some of us are going!... they'll be seeing a lot of red shirts with IKE logos there... at Grand Haven's beach! i sure hope that some of you can make it!

Yeah...Let's do it. :dualspin:

By the way, I went to practice at Redondo Beach, CA. today and...man I am getting better with my Revo. and much better with my Deep Space, it was aplause after aplause from the beach goers. I am gonna go for some very intensive super advanced tricks next time. :dualspin:
and I am gonna try to film some just to record it. 8)

outsidetheboxkitestudio,
yes, Perry Farms will have competition. On Saturday only this year, and note the new date for Perry Farms: June 16-17th
And as I said at the top of the forum, we don't have any competitors, although with a little encouragement, Chris might compete.

Hector, if you're serious about competing, you'll need to learn these figures:
here or here
I don't there's many competitions in Southern Calfiornia anymore, but the northern club used to schedule some comps down south, check 'em out here.
There's more on the official AKA comps at the AKA web site, here.

Shabonna Lake was looking to hold a kite competition. Last I heard, they weren't able to make connections with any competitors willing to help it get off the ground, but that may have changed. The guy that runs the restaraunt there is the contact.

The OutsideDBox fellow, and his Indiana friends, would not, i'm sure, be interested in precision flying so much, but would be more interested in competition involving tricks and such... like freestyle and ballet. They are very capable trick-oriented fliers, and i suspect that precision would bore them to death. Their 8) Trick Clinic, in Muncie, on Labor Day weekend, is a blast!

Hola Tom...thanks. Honestly, to have a real comp., precision is a big part of it. Yes it kills me to do a big figure x3, when i could be doing back spins or JL's, but never the less it shows skill. We are going to have a Hot Trick shot out at the Ansel Toney, May fifth in Muncie In. if all goes well, or a game of "horse". We will also be getting a comp going for the Summer Trick Clinic this year, Labor day weekend in Muncie In. over night camping, flying for fun and free, and fun fun fun. Please check it out on google maps, this place is huge, ask Tom.

If anyone is interested; the AKA kite talk forum has a section for competitive fliers, if you have anything to add it would be welcome. Now what about the Gordon bro's? Why are they not members here? I think you might have a few comp fliers in the wings just waiting for a reason to come out and play, yes thats right i said play. I understand the whole"no competition" thing, i do. I also think one way to get better is to do your best and for some it takes a little competition to get things going. And as to the work part of it, well sir i ask you, have you ever worked up a sweat in light wind or heavy wind having fun flying your kite? I feel like i work on many occasions.

Competition is you, the kite, the wind, and anything else is just a show in my head. I watch these videos and get a real feeling of being pushed to do better or more, same as a comp does but i have no pressure to get it right. This competitive thing was just the next level for me. For you, not so much. I still would love to have people show up and have a good time, keep score, judge, cheer, assist, hangout, have fun flying and seeing what its all about from another perspective... Its just a bunch of people flying kites and some of them happen to go head to head for a challenge. No big whoop.

Where is this Shabonna place you speak of Draftnik? I need to look into that. Perry farms June 16-17 check...Chris, come out come out where ever you are. Hector, can you make it out here over labor day weekend??? It will be great. Come on Tom, ZippyD, you would not just do your best tricks or figures and see what others did? That's really all it is, or that's what i tell myself so as to not get "nervous". Nervous, flying a kite... kinda funny huh. Hey what about a kite makers retreat as part of the deal? Fun fly, Comp, camping, fishing near by, Kite building session... See, plenty going on. Who's in?

You make it sound real tempting. Even to a quad line flier who can't even axel a dual.

Zach Gordon is a member, but doesn't visit often. You can email him: he goes by takoboy on this forum.
