Looking for Kite Flying Demonstration at Event
Hello Kite Enthusiasts - we are hosting for the first time "Let's Go Fly A Kite" event on Saturday, May 16 at Centennial Park in Palos Park. We are offering plastic kites to the kids to fly but want to show the excitement of flying special kites and the variety that are out there. The event begins at 11 AM. Please let me know if anyone is interested in doing a demonstration on kite flying. If so we will begin to publicize your involvement. Thank for the consideration. LeeAnn lfisk@palospark.org

So, any of you Chicago folks going to be around that weekend?
Re: Looking for Kite Flying Demonstration at Event
Maybe next time. I'll be at the restaurant show. Sorry to miss it.

Thanks for posting here on the forum. I love hearing about local kite festivals.
Not sure I can make it though . . . . I might be around, but I might not. My son has a camping trip that weekend, and I haven't gone with him yet this year. It's the last one until the fall . . ..

Hmm...I don't know where this park is. I grew up down there and my aunt and uncle lived there for decades. If I go, would definitely have to stop by the Plush Horse ice cream parlor off SW Hwy. Haven't been there in years. Palos Park is pretty wooded unless you go to the slough, but even then I don't know where there would be enough open land to fly.

Googling found this:
Saturday, May 16 Let’s Go Fly a Kite
Spend time with the family at our newest park, Centennial Park and enjoy the freedom of kite flying. We’ll bring all the Kite supplies. Be sure to register in advance and bring a breezy day!
Time: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Location: Centennial Park
12216 S. Will Cook Rd
(next to Holy Family Villa)
Fee: $15R/$17Upp/$21NR (per family)
This is the first festival I've seen that charges a fee.
I take that back--I think the one Dieppe, Canada charged a fee.

I hope we wouldn't be charged.

At "Kites 'n MPX" north of Cincy last Saturday, the park department charged anyone who didn't have a Metro Parks vehicle permit (available only to Butler County, Ohio residents) an admission fee to get into VOA park. That's why we all needed the volunteer pass to get through the gate.
A couple years ago, I was announcer for a festival north of Lansing, Mich that charged admission. The festival was intended as a fund-raiser to help build a community park. The event was not well attended and did not occur the following year.
I decided I needed a signature line, so I wrote this.

There has been the occasional parking fee, but that's different from an admission fee. You can fit a bunch of people in one car, or take public transportation.
To attend this festival, a non-resident family of 4 would pay $84.

Seems outrageous. Especially for only a two hour event.

Next, they'll be charging a "wind rental" fee to kite flyers, which I would gladly pay as long as it's 4mph and smooth as silk.

Palos Parks & rec is probably getting our replies to this thread. Perhaps they want to chime in regarding how volunteers would attend the event? Would free passes be provided to experience kite flyers to attend?

Hello all - sorry I have not checked back on the page since posted. We do charge for families that need kites. No charge if you bring your own kite. The park is our newest park on Will Cook Road on five acres of open land within the Holy Family Villa property - Google Earth the location. If any one from the group wants to show off the great sport of kite flying , please email at lfisk@palospark.org and we will begin to advertise your involvement. Please bring information about the Club maybe get a few folks involved. Thank you for your consideration.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

I'll have to check with the boss, but I might be able to make this. Not sure if I was going to make the day trip to Grand Haven.

That would be awesome!
Re: Looking for Kite Flying Demonstration at Event
So since I figured a day trip to GLKF was too far to go safely, I'm going to help out the rec dept. If there is anyone in town and wants help too, please feel free. I can't pass up an opportunity to get my stuff out with people who want me to be there.

I have to leave town the next day on the job so I may be busy on Saturday getting things finished before I go. If not I might be able to show up.
