Directions to the festival from the east of DeKalb...

Go to I-88 west. Take I-88 to the second DeKalb exit (Annie Glidden Rd.) Take Annie Glidden Rd. north to Lucinda Ave. (about 2 miles off of I-88) Turn right on Lucinda, go about 3/4 miles and turn left on Kishwaukee Dr. There is going to be someone there to take money for parking, just let them know you're with IKE to get around that.

A Google Map...

Little history on the festival...

The kids had asked JJ and I for awhile why our own town didn't have a kite festival. We'd been traveling to other towns for festivals and they wanted one in our own town. A few emails and phone converstations went on with folks in town, and we had just started sorting out who the interested parties might be in the DeKalb Kite Festival when...

Kiteslayer had an assignment in school to write a persuasive letter to someone of his choice. He choose to write the Mayor of DeKalb and ask him to come to the DeKalb Kite Festival. The Mayor called him at school the very day he got the letter to say he'd be there.

The festival at that point was nothing more then a few interested parties. No date, no time, no field! But the Mayor was coming, somewhere, someday, sometime, because of a letter 4th grade Kiteslayer had written him. :-)

The day we had all the details finally pinned down and the Mayor returned Kiteslayers phone call to get them from him...I handed him my cell phone and in front of friends said, "Honey, it's the Mayor for you."

Inside scoop...at 9:30 on the kite field we'd like the kiters to meet near the demo field for a meeting. We're asking you all to bring a kite to show. Something you've made, a new toy, or some new fangled way of doing something with a kite. We're not going to fly these, just take some time to see and admire the kites on the ground before the festival starts. You're not required to fly whatever you show, and it doesn't have to be something new.

I personally have a list of 'wanna see's' that will earn extra credit if they're brought out for the drool fest. Contact me for suggestions if you'd like.

Dahval,

here a link to the original Dekalb thread. There is a map in there..

http://www.ikeclub.org/Forums/viewtopic ... d=-1&t=745

it's pretty easy to get to... you are pretty far north and could probably take 90 east to Rt. 47... but I think it would be easier if you took 94 south to 294 to I88 west. Take 88 west until you get to Annie Glidden Rd (all the signs will point you there) and the fest is on the NIU Campus.

Here's a little better view..

I've been looking forward to this festival for the longest time, can't wait until Sunday. Drafty, I wish you much success, there's a lot of work involved in an endevor like this. Especially as a civilian and not a retailer. This takes a real love for kites and those that fly them. Ok, maybe even the non-flying spectators. There's no profits to be made here for the organizer, a true work from the heart. Chris, your a gem. Thanks to all of the other volunteers, IKER's and the O/M family. And a big congrats to the KITESLAYER, you are da man.

Nice article Chris.
Yesterday, when I was looking at my newspaper down here in Champaign, there was a supplement containing places to visit around Illinois. I was flipping through the supplement when I saw a photo of Mimi! The DeKalb festival was listed.

You've sure done the job of getting publicity Chris. Excellent.

:thanks: everyone for the kind words.

I can't take the credit for the promotions. That is done by the sponsors. The DeKalb Chamber has a Vistors Bureau and they've gone all out to get the word out as have other sponsors.
