Decatur Kite Festival

Postby Mike » Sun, Apr 08 2007, 05:13 PM

Decatur Illinois
April 28 and 29.

This is a new festival. It would be great to get as many IKE members there as possible. Even if you can only come one of the two days, it would be great to see you there. They plan on doing a fair amount of advertising, so there could be some nice crowds.

Since it was so cold last week, we've got to be done with the bad weather and also Decatur is in the warm part of our state (it's south of most of you anyway), so the weekend of the festival should be sunny and windy and beautiful.

The Hampton Inn in Forsyth is offering rooms for $69 (regular $100) per night to those participants coming for the event. To get a room at that rate they can call the Hampton Inn Manager Angela Steinhauer at 217-877-5577.

If folks want to share a room that can make it pretty affordable.

Driving directions:
Off Interstate 72 take Exit 144, Rt. 48 - south to second stop light. Turn left onto Brush College Rd. and go south to next traffic light. Turn left into College Park grounds. Go to the next right and then to the next left. That is where we hope to have the vendor trailers.

Map of festivals, Decatur is #9

How about some of the more southern folks: Denny, Steve, Tom...?
You guys need to pick up your red shirts anyway; why not at Decatur?

Al, think you can make it? What would it take to make it worth your while? PM or email me.

I am so groggy I can not see straight right now. Just trying to stay up late enough to try and straighten out my sleep cycle. I will address this tomorrow.

I'll be there both days, we may drive down Friday night. It's a big area. There is a access road running east and west leading to the public flying area. Two large fields, one to the north and one to the south of this access road is where they would like the big single line kites to fly. Depending on the wind direction we'll fly in one field and they will park cars in the other. The fields are planted in alfalfa and should be 6-8 inches tall. Should be plenty of room for all.

Anybody know the schedule for this event? When does it start Saturday morning? Are they playing soccer after the fly?

The forecast for Decatur looks like sun and wind!

I haven't seen the field, but akillip said it's huge. He also said there's a mown area as well as the alfalfa area.

This is Decatur's first try at a big festival. Come for one or both days. It would be nice to see a bunch of red shirts out there!

If we get a good turnout, next year I'll see if I can work with the St. Louis kite club to have a joint club meet/fly/festival.
Decatur looks to be about 1/2 way between Chicago and St. Louis and would make a good meeting place.

If you don't mind sharing a room, I may have an extra bed available for Saturday night. Free.

I just got a little more info today.
The festival is scheduled for 10 to 2pm. They were afraid to schedule it longer for their first fest.
The grounds are available all day as it's not a fenced in area so we can stay and fly as long as we want.
They'll start setting up around 8:30, and I'll try to be there around that time too. But I'm only an hour away.

Welcome Shawn!
I'll be lookin' for your "blue meanies" kites. Have you met Al? He's TheBigKiteGuy in the previous post, who has, as you may have guessed, some big kites too.
Should be fun this weekend, see you Saturday.
