The New York Times published a little video today of fighter kites in Brazil.

thanks Rose, that was interesting.
I wonder what they are using for spars. It's hard to tell in the video.

I'm guessing the spears are bamboo, hand shaped.
There's a huge event in India where the whole town has hundreds of people flying from rooftops.

I know in Asian countries that bamboo is used, but in the first glimpse we see of a spar in the video, it looked like a rod, in the second it looked like it might be bamboo.

edit: I take it back. On re-watching, there's a bit that even shows the kid shaving a piece of bamboo (or at least wood of some sort).
