I exported the file from Adobe Illustrator in to DXF for you to play with.
Download here.

<tsk> Adobe has the file secured with a .dxf_ extention. Drop the _ and I can get at it.

I don't understand. It downloads ok onto a different computer and I can open it with Illustrator.
Are you using a PC or a Mac? I'm using a PC, perhaps that's the trouble.
Is the filename the problem? Can you rename it?

I got it to work Mike. Can I get another format also. A pdf or jpg or bmp?

Found an image I could use and it's done. the logo minus the text on the outside ready for plotting to any size.

I can't seem to do the outside text right. Either it's not ariel style or the U' in enthusiasts has been justified to make it look better.

So who wants to slap it on a pilot? Currently it measures 7' x 7'. Would take a few pieces of paper, but it can be done.

If we keep the necessary elements, ie 4 kites and lKE and webaddress, can anybody design their own banner or do we need to have it approved first?

It might be kind of cool if there were several different concepts on the same theme flapping in the breeze!

Draftnik:
I guess I haven't posted a photo of it. But I took the sail from this kite, which I didn't care for:
[albumimg]51[/albumimg]
And made it into a modified Pilot. I scaled the dimensions down by 70% (50% less surface area) and didn't use the center keel. Also changed the outside keel shape. I'll have to find a photo. I've flown it a club flies, someone must have a photo...

Logo: All the text was modified so as to fit and justify. The file I posted had the outline of the text so you could plot it on your plotter without having to worry about what font it was. At least, that's what I thought I was doing.

Drachenschwanz:
I agree with you, I'd like to see different designs. I think it would be good to have the colors mostly limited to Black, White and Red as well as the logo or kites from the logo.
I prefer the using the logo as is, but hey, whatever you guys want to do is fine.

I also think it would look best if all the banners were the same basic size and shape too, but here again, I'm flexible.

If any of the founding members of IKE want to weigh in with a different opinion, I expect we'll hear from them by tomorrow morning :-)

Looks good Mike!

I'm not a founding member, but the more I think about it the more I like the idea of having different banners. Sorta struts our kite making stuff more then uniform banners would.

here's a couple more

[albumimg]745[/albumimg]

Jenny thinks the ones on the left look like knives...lol

The walmart pan fishing poles are 13' and I think I'll base mine on that length for now.

I do have a 5 and 6 meter pole also...

In the end, the vertical along the spine will be white with www.ikeclub.org on it in black. The IKE in the center will have 2 sides with something opaque between them so that it can be read from both sides.

Those look good bman. I like the one on the right the best.

Another option, cause we don't have enough yet. :mrviolet: Keep the webaddress on seperate thin banners.

can you more experienced people answer my question on the difference between 200 and 400 denier cloth? In terms of banners, which would be more appropriate?

Chris, I like that idea on the thin banners

I wonder if it's possible to get by with a single thickness banner on the thin one with web address...if there were two...one the mirror of the other? At least one would be facing right and readable all the time.

I can't answer the denier question, but I'm interested in the answer too. I think that Texlon handles the SolarMax brand and that I've seen, and it's nice stuff.

Neat suggestions so far!

It would be neat, also i think, to try something unique, like utilizing holographic fabric, to help with making things "stand out".

Here's a cool on-line shop that has banner material and rip-stop fabric too:

Ok, finally got access to a camera, mine's been borrowed out for a couple of weeks. This is a paper mockup of the banner I'd like to make. (if there aren't any objections!) I've only made one banner, the penguin from MAKR but it should be fun. At least I'll learn a lot!

Any comments, recommendations or suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated!

That banner looks great. A fair amount of appliqué involved on that one!
I like that you're using the logo.

What material are you thinking of using?

There was a post over at kitebuilder where someone found from his club's experience that .75 oz ripstop didn't hold up all that well, but 1.5 oz did.
No one has directly compared the wear of 200 denier banner fabric with 1.5 oz ripstop though.

I think appliqué would be much easier with crispy coated ripstop though.

Can you tell us more about the penguin banner?
How tall is it?
What material did you use?
What pole are you using to display the banner?
Any other hints or info?

thanks!

Wow! That’s a lot of questions for a relative novice to answer!

Let see, I was planning on using SolarMax. I’ve heard good things about it from several kite people at various festivals. SolarMax is supposed to be great at holding color and it’s 200 denier. According to Texlon that’s 3oz. The squares should end up about 18 inches across so there should be plenty of room to appliqué. I’ll ask Draftnick for a print out in the right size to make my template. It should end up around 11 or 12 feet tall and 40 inches wide.

The penguin banner was the one we made at MAKR last month. (Wow was it just last month?) It’s about 12.5’ tall and uses a 13’ pan fishing pole from walmart ($6.99). We used ¾ oz rip stop to build it. I don’t have a picture of mine yet but Draftnick might have one of hers. If you look at the MAKR website there’s a picture of it with it’s designers. If my wife gets done by Saturday, we should have at least three at Sycamore.

It helped a great deal to have experienced sewing machine users to direct and a pre-made pattern to follow!
