Next Rok

OK, started another Rokkaku tonight, one that involved a bit more applique....

I started out by finding a GREAT (in my mind anyway :rotfl ) pic of Brian Griffin, and making a transparency. And then putting my new overhead projector to use.

And then tracing the image on the first layer of black ripstop. I think I may have made life difficult by starting with the black, but hey....

By drawing on the black, you'll be sewing on the top and you don't have to remember to reverse your drawing as you do when you draw on the white, bottom layer. Should work just fine. I don't bother to erase my lines when appliquéing from the back, but from the front, you might want to. Of course, being the perfectionist that you are, I'm sure yoiu erase from the back too. :-D

Applique is not qiute done, but I had to take a break, my back is killing me!

The sewing is way easier than the cutting(as you can tell by the blue tape :x )
I was suprised how much the colors change when on top of each other.

I'll post a pic of the finished applique when it's done. Now it's time for rest, I feel a cold coming on. :doc:

Oh boy, did a cold come on! I'm laid up here at home with 101.5 temp... :x: It's been a while since I've been sick.

Anyhow, once I get my body rested up, I will continue on the Rok. I pick up a great tip on kitebuilder when doing applique. After I cut through the wrong portion of the sail, I suddenly remembered it....

Use a seam ripper! I poke a small hole (carefully!!) and stick the ball end of the ripper into the fabric, and just go to town! I still have to use my small scissors for the small parts, but the ripper works GREAT. :mrblue:

Thanks for the compliments guys

Chris

A tip we picked up from Rod Milburn, is to sew a penny into each section of an applique on top of the layer you want to keep to make it easy to cut through only the layer you want to cut.

I think I REALLY like this black ripstop!

BTW, any tips on what to wash the basting spray off with? It's not terribly sticky, but enough to pick up loads of dust and dirt.

Man, that's excellent work Chris!
The only thing I've found to get the sticky off is with a goo-gone sort of thing.

Paint thinner does a credible job as well. Cheaper, anyway. :-)

oh yeah, that too, thanks kiteguy.
In either case just a little on a rag or paper towel does it.

Goo Gone & paint thinner don't degrade the fabric's coating at all?? (Nice rok Chris!!!!)

Thanks for the "props" I was worried about chemicals too, but that was before I saw that the basting spray I used contains acetone!
