UFO

Postby Chris » Fri, Dec 01 2006, 11:21 AM

How about a no-sew forum? I put this UFO together this morning with a silver Mylar blanket I picked up at wal-mart for two dollars. That and some fiberglass spars I scavenged from some cheap store-bought kites. I got the plan from true colors, thanks Ivo

I figure if it doesn't fly, it will always work as a Christmas tree ornament!!!! :rotfl

I really did LOL at the Xmas tree ornament.
Take it out there and fly it in the snow!
Can you give some details of the plan you used? What are the connectors?

Here's the link to the plans- http://www.cit.gu.edu.au/~anthony/kites ... ufo_build/

Instead of washers, and vinyl tubing, I just used some miscellaneous connectors I had lying around. I saw one guy used cable ties instead of washers.

It's a standoff connector from an old Toys R Us stunt kite.

Is weight added? What stabilizes this kite? Looks like it would be jittery at best.

Cool looking kite though, I dig the emergency blanket.

The vertical fin stabilizes it, and they say it creates quite the vibration in the line! I'll see if I can get some video of it flying(if it does fly  )

Wow, really? So jittery that it no longer jitters, but vibrates? Sounds like a military aircraft... (thus the name UFO, gotch'a) when will you be adding the AFCS...

I hope it does well for you, and if you do have good luck I might have to try putting one together... Just out of shear curiosity.

If it isn't stable enough to fly, you could do what I induced from Mikes post, (I just can't in good conscience suggest that Mike inferred anything) use the tree for a tail.

I read somewhere that "they" don't allow commercially available kites made out of silver Mylar to be sold in the US. I guess there was one too many incidents of kite vs. power grid

I have a book from Drachen Foundation with alot of interesting kites in it. One looks for all the world like a needleless evergreen tree. I can't find the book at the moment to confirm if it is a real tree or not. IIRC, it is. And the thing flew long enough to get a pic of it!
