The representation of concepts such as crime, punishment, law and judicial system in TV and cinema texts restructures the way of thinking of the audience towards these phenomena. In visual texts, while positive representation of these phenomena necessary for social order and continuation of the society make these foundations valuable and important in the viewers' eyes, negative representation of them protecting the strong and in favor of powerful cause the audience to lose their confidence and faith in these institutions. In this thesis which examines the representation of crime and punishment in TV serials the Turkish drama serial Karadayı, which is aired during 3 seasons with episodes and which has the story line basically covering the illegal relations between justice system, police, bullying/mafia and media, and their deviant reflections by official institutions in s Turkey, is analyzed. Departing from the fact that in the drama serial Karadayı, justice and security agencies and the representation of the manner of operation of these institutions has the role of formatting todays' society's perception of crime and punishment, the drama Karadayı is examined in terms of representation of crime and punishment; it is put forward that how the relation between crime, punishment and justice are represented in the drama. In the thesis, using qualitative content analysis method the textual analysis is made, the concept of representation, ideology, reality, crime and punishment is discussed on the grounds of which 'Reflective, Intentional, and Constructive Theories of Representation' by Hall; 'Ideological State Apparatus and Repressive State Apparatus' comprehension of Althusser; Roland Barthes's approach to 'Five Codes Which are Woven into any Narrative' and in constructing the meaning it is examined the ideological role, function of the media, of the television text particularly of the drama serial Karadayı. In the result of this analysis, it is determined in the drama that practices accepted as criminal acts are identified by law and if done they are punished according to the seriousness of the offence. More than that in the context of the drama Karadayı it is perpetually emphasized that the concept of justice, right, law are remained in the darkness, judicial system protects not rightful but powerful one. Even though Mahir the protagonist's faith in judicial system and in sooner or later, God's justice manifests itself indicates that the dominant ideology is reproduced. Thus, it has been concluded that the television serials fix the meaning and encode the preferred reading for the audience as a means of making certain choices from heterogeneous, diverse, and fragmented reality, of bringing them together in a certain direction.
