Creating variety in your diet to get more nutrients and to avoid adverse effects of over-dieting, and orthorexia, or obsession with &#;clean&#; food. Lot of bodybuilders and &#;fit&#; people have been brainwashed by coaches who tell them that the only &#;clean food&#; in this world are fish, rice, eggs, oats, sweet potatoes and asparagus/broccoli. And the other extremists are vegans who believe anything animal is unhealthy&#; which in my opinion is also orthorexia. I am not a doctor but it is COMMON SENSE using my science background and having had worked with registered dietitians that variety is key to having a balanced diet for overall health clinically (blood test shows nutrient deficiency), mentally and emotionally.

Don’t have to eat plain (the boring ONLY foods your bro science coach gives you to be a bodybuilder.. unless of course you’re super close to a contest,then you gotta stick to only what your body is familiar with and easier to measure/track!!!

A silly question to ask is: “Can I substitute rice with rice noodle ?&#; Think about the ingredient. It’s the SAME thing .. just read the label and .. match the portion to your plan !!!

In a typical bodybuilding plan, a physique coach (who isn&#;t considering your health) usually puts only fish or chicken, rice, eggs and one or two types of veggies like broccoli or asparagus. A plan like that is easy to track and follow because of its simplicity. However, it does NOT address nutritional requirements of an individual and can cause physical, social and emotional issues&#; sometimes even leading to orthorexia or some type of eating disorder (over restricted then binging, obsessing over food, or being afraid to eat, OVER dieting chronically all year long etc chasing the shreds at the cost of health eunic-brussels.eual, mental, and emotional).

As a result, I highly recommend (and I am pretty sure my registered dietician mentors will agree as well) adding variety instead of JUST relying on a cheat meal (that most bodybuilding coaches prescribe weekly for diet break). It&#;s as simple as swapping foods with similar macros. Now, it&#;s a lot of extra work on the coach, especially if they aren&#;t good at the basic math or don&#;t want to invest the eunic-brussels.eu will avoid adding variety at any cost. It&#;s just EASIER to monitor and manipulate a plan that is simple. The extra work may seem daunting to many but empowering clients with education is a great investment for clients and the coach. I teach my clients about macros, food swapping and pros and cons of certain choices (fortunately, I have good memory and I can perform basic mental math quick enough to plan a program with variety of foods eunic-brussels.eu if a coach can&#;t there are apps and Google they can use to look up nutrition facts).

Having variety in diet ensures :

Cons of Swapping too Much

  • new substitute food item may have allergens you didn&#;t know about
  • your digestive system may react weird to new food (especially new spices etc
  • it&#;s easy to lose track of the portion since you&#;re not used to eating it regularly
  • introducing too many new things to the body can be confusing and you wouldn&#;t know which one caused the reaction
  • if it&#;s packaged or pre-made it may have too much salt or preservatives, etc
  • easy to get carried away

Happy National Meditation month! If there is something I should try and be better about its setting aside time for meditation and/or mindfulness. I recently had a great experience when I invited a group of 6 women to listen to a guided meditation with me.     These are the steps that I will follow when practicing.

    1. Couch, bed, yoga mat or comfortable chair.
  2. Schedule a time.
    1. Returning home for the day
    2. Before bed
    3. When I find myself feeling stressed, anxious or overwhelmed.
  3. Decide what type of meditation you will do.
    1. I will try different types of  meditation by using apps on my phone until I find one that I like.
  4. Grab what I need.
    1. Something to sit on, or lean against
    2. My headphones.

How To: Slow Cooker Black Beans

An easy recipe for making the best slow cooker black beans you&#;ll ever taste!

I&#;ve been told I make the best slow cooker black beans ever, but I can&#;t take all the credit. When we were still dating, my husband taught me how his family made Brazilian-style black beans when he was growing up.  His aunt showed me how to make black beans in the slow cooker.  Before that, I thought beans had to cook them in a pressure cooker to get them soft like the canned beans we bought.  (I still remember trying to chew on the crunchy beans we&#;d try to cook at my house when I was growing up! Ha!)

Over the past 16+ years, I&#;ve perfected it.  (High five!)  It&#;s not too difficult, but because I make slow cooker black beans about once a week or so, it was important for me to get it right and I had ample opportunity for practice.  We eat them throughout the week either as a side on top of rice, in soup, or one of my favorite ways, mixed with quinoa and salsa for breakfast.

There are a few secrets to making awesome slow cooker black beans, and it applies to other types of beans and legumes too.

Let&#;s get started!

Flavoring Slow Cooker Black Beans is Important

The difference between the beans I make and other recipes is that I rely heavily on aromatics to flavor the beans as they cook.  It truly does make all the difference.

The aromatics I use:

  • Yellow, white, or red onion &#; chopped or halved, it doesn&#;t matter as long as it&#;s in there. If you don&#;t want chopped onion in the cooked beans, use larger pieces so they are easy to remove after cooking. I like to use onion halves while cooking, then add sautéed chopped onion to the beans before we eat them.
  • Whole garlic cloves &#; remove after cooking; add fresh garlic when using the beans in a recipe (same as above)
  • Bay leaves &#; these are integral!!! Don&#;t be tempted to bypass the bay leaves. The flavor they add is unmatched and really make these the best beans ever. Promise.
  • Salt &#; ADDED AT THE END OF COOKING TIME!

In the comments below, you can read what other readers have added to make the recipe their own. Totally add cumin, oregano, paprika, chili powder, or other chopped veggies like celery, chilies or bell peppers. I prefer to make a large plain batch of beans and add those other spices and ingredients when I&#;m making a recipe with the cooked beans. I think of them and use them the same way I do canned beans. But by all means, spice it up!

One of the best things we do is add a ham bone to the pot. (Yes, there&#;s salt in that, but it hasn&#;t made too much of a difference like adding plain salt has.) It becomes the base of Brazilian feijoada (black bean and meat stew) to which we add other meats and sausages.

But, what if you add salt to beans at the beginning of the cooking time?!

I get this question often. The reason the salt is added at the end is because it can inhibit the beans from softening. Will the beans turn out okay if you didn&#;t wait until the end? Probably. Hopefully! Other things can also prevent the beans from softening as they cook too. (See further below for the answer to that question!)

Do Beans Have to Be Washed Before Cooking?

Yes! It&#;s VERY important to sort the dried beans and give them a good rinse before before cooking them.

Before you rinse the beans, sort out any small stones, broken, wrinkled, or otherwise misshaped beans.

I will place the dry beans into a large bowl or on a large plate and go through them. I find that black beans are more notorious for stones than other varieties of beans; probably because they are smaller. Dried beans aren&#;t usually washed before they are packaged up. I&#;ve bought dried beans from a local farmer&#;s market that were covered in dust from the field, tons of small rocks, and even bits of grass, weeds, or grain. I don&#;t like eating dirt&#;I don&#;t know about you!

To rinse the beans, you can do one of two things: 1) place them in a large colander (with small holes) or a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under running water, or 2) my preferred way, place the sorted beans in a large bowl of cool water. Agitate the beans with your hands to loosen any dirt, drain through a sieve or colander; repeat until the dirt is gone. The black beans will color the water, so it won&#;t ever &#;run clear.&#; But you should be able to see that there is no longer dirt at the bottom of the bowl.

Do You Have To Soak Beans Before Cooking? What About Boiling Beans First?

Ah, the most frequently asked question! I used to think you HAD to soak beans before cooking until I didn&#;t one time and they cooked in the same amount of time as when I soaked them. This got me to thinking that it probably wasn&#;t an issue when using a slow cooker. I&#;m not sure how much it cuts down on cooking time on the stovetop.

Soaking is thought to help remove anti-nutrients or the extra starches that can cause gas and bloating commonly associated with beans. Personally, I don&#;t believe soaking them makes them all that more digestible, nor do I believe the part of anti-nutrients. Eating beans often will help your body become accustomed to the fiber and starches in the beans and you&#;ll probably end up with less gas and bloating.

This advice (remember I&#;m not an expert per se), does not pertain to kidney beans. They should be boiled first in water, drained and rinsed, then placed in the slow cooker with fresh water. I&#;ve never been sick from eating beans that weren&#;t soaked or boiled, but some may have more sensitivities than I do.

My advice: Do what you think is best for YOU and your family. The slow cooker I use is a high end one and I know that it heats properly and cooks at a high enough temperature. I also use HIGH rather than LOW most often. Like I said, we have never been sick from a pot of beans &#; not even once. I&#;ve cooked hundreds of batches of slow cooker beans with no problem at all.

Now We Put The Beans, Water, and Aromatics in the Slow Cooker

Everything goes into the slow cooker, except the salt, and is covered with water.

My slow cooker is very large (affiliate link), so I can make 2 pounds or more at a time.  I use around 6 cups of water for each pound of beans.  That is more than enough water. It may seem like too much water, but if too little water is added, the beans might absorb what water there is and burn.  (This may or may not have happened to me a few times.)

You can always drain them later. We like to ladle a bit of the cooking liquid with the beans onto rice &#; it&#;s very flavorful. If I make black bean soup, I will also reserve some of the cooking liquid to flavor the broth.

How Long Do You Cook Slow Cooker Beans?

  • For my particular slow cooker(s) I cook the beans on HIGH for 3 hours, or LOW for 6+ hours.
  • This varies a little if the beans are older or if I am cooking more than one pound at a time.
  • Different brands, sizes, and shapes of slow cookers may vary slightly. Use my directions as a guide and take notes the first few times until you get it just right.

When Do You Add the Salt to Slow Cooker Black Beans?

About 30 minutes before the end of the cooking time, remove the lid of the slow cooker and remove a few beans with a spoon and blow on them.  If the skins peel back, the beans are done.  They may still be a little firm. Taste one to be sure. If it&#;s still a little crunchy, the beans need more time. Another hour on HIGH, or a few hours on LOW.

How Much Salt Do You Add To Beans?

I use 1 TABLESPOON per 1 POUND of dry beans. That sounds like a lot of salt, I know! But that salt will absorb into the beans and be just the right amount. Now, if you are on a salt restricted diet, of course you can omit the salt completely or use less. We&#;ve found we like the 1 Tablespoon per pound and that the beans are well-seasoned and ready to eat or use in a recipe.

After stirring in the salt, replace the lid and let them continue cooking for the additional 30 minutes, or longer. If the beans cooked more quickly, I will remove the insert, add the salt and put the lid back and let the beans absorb the salt off the heat.

 

How To Store Slow Cooker Black Beans

The beauty of making a big batch of slow cooker beans is that you can use some now and save some for later.

After cooking the beans and seasoning them, I let them cool completely before transferring to containers or resealable freezer bags for storage.

The beans freeze very well separated into quart or gallon-sized bags. Freezing them in flat layers helps with both storage and thawing. They stack nicely and are easy to slip into a bowl of warm water when you&#;re ready to use them.

The slow cooker black beans will keep for about a week in an airtight container in the fridge. They will keep several months in a normal freezer, or even up to a year in a deep freeze.

How Many Cups Does One Pound of Dry Beans Equal?

One pound of dry beans yields about 5 cups of beans (minus the liquid), which is the equivalent of about 3 (ounce) cans of beans, give or take.

    Which Slow Cooker Should I Buy?

    I have owned a few different slow cookers over the years. I started with a CrockPot given to me by a good friend. I loved that slow cooker and used it often until it stopped working. Boo! I then purchased an All-Clad Quart Slow Cooker with a non-stick metal oven- and stovetop-safe insert. I loved that slow cooker dearly, but unfortunately the non-stick coating bubbled and peeled and I believe it became hazardous to keep using it. It also stopped working shortly thereafter or I would have replaced the insert. (Or it might have been our wonky old house and it&#;s crazy electrical system that did it&#;)

    Next, not wanting to give up completely on All-Clad, I bought another All-Clad Quart Slow Cooker, but this time with a ceramic inserts. I ADORE THIS SLOW COOKER. But it is a bit more expensive and not always practical for everyone. It&#;s huge, basically. As far as price goes, they have come down a lot. They used to sell for around $ and now you can find them under $

    Because I use my slow cooker numerous times a week, and because I sometimes photograph cookbooks and recipes for clients, I needed an extra slow cooker to keep up with all the slow cooker recipes I photograph. Ha! I added a CrockPot 7-quart slow cooker because they are affordable and work well. (Not as well as my All-Clad, but a decent second place.)

    I have yet to purchase an InstantPot or pressure cooker. I have used one in the past, but I have an irrational fear of both pressure cooking and deep frying. I&#;m trying to overcome both. ;) This year () I will buy an InstantPot and add directions for those that have asked.

Troubleshooting: My Slow Cooker Black Beans Aren&#;t Soft! What Did I Do Wrong?!

First thing, take a deep breath and before you leave a nasty comment, a few things: 1) it&#;s not the recipe. I&#;ve literally made this hundreds of times successfully, as have numerous readers and friends. 2) it&#;s probably not you! I&#;ll explain more below.

Here are common reasons your slow cooker beans didn&#;t turn out:

  • The beans were old. This is a tough one because you never really know how long a bag of beans has been hanging out on that grocery store shelf or in that bulk bin. My advice is to purchase beans from somewhere that has a decent turn over of their products. Dust on a bag is a good clue it&#;s been there for awhile. And still, you may get a back of old beans despite your best efforts. They may never get soft even if you cook them for three days. Sorry, it&#;s not you or me, it&#;s the beans.
  • Your slow cooker may not be cooking at the proper temperature or there may be something else going on. (Raise your hand if you&#;ve forgotten to turn it on or plug it in&#;just me? Ahem.) Slow cookers wear out. You may have bought a lemon. Your electrical circuit may not be functioning properly. Who knows? If it&#;s not bubbling under the lid when it&#;s on HIGH, you&#;ve got a problem.
  • You added salt at the beginning and weren&#;t one of the lucky ones for whom it didn&#;t make a difference. Boo! I&#;m sorry. You can try draining off the water and starting with some fresh water and try again. Or you can cut your losses and remember to save that salt for the end next time.
  • Um, it&#;s not any of those things above!!! Yeah, well, I&#;m so sorry I can&#;t be of more help. Sometimes recipes flop. Don&#;t throw your slow cooker out the window or sent me hate mail just yet. Give it another try with another bag of beans and see if that helps.

    • 1lb. black beans, picked over to remove broken or wrinkled beans or small stones
    • 6cups water
    • 1 onion, halved or diced
    • 2&#;3 whole garlic cloves
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 1 tablespoon salt (this seems like a lot, but is fine with this much water, you can use less)
    1. Place the beans in a big bowl, cover with water, agitate the beans a few times to remove any dirt, drain in a colander and rinse again.
    2. Place black beans, onion, garlic cloves, and bay leaf in a slow cooker. Add water.
    3. Cook on high for about hours, testing after 3 hours. To test doneness, spoon out a few beans and blow on them. If the skins peel back, they beans are ready. Taste just to make sure. If all of the water has been absorbed, add more. Beans must stay completely covered to prevent them from burning. If cooking on low for hours, test the beans at the 6 hour point.
    4. Add the salt and let cook, or sit with heat off for another minutes, to absorb the salt. Remove the bay leaf, garlic cloves, and onion before using, if desired.
    5. Use immediately, or allow to cool before transferring beans and some of the cooking liquid to a zipper-lock freezer bag or airtight container and refrigerate for up to 1 week, or freeze up to 3 months. If freezing, flatten bag in freezer&#;it makes for easier defrosting. Defrost in warm water.

    Variations:
    White beans (Great Northern, Cannelini, navy, black eyed peas)
    -add to the slow cooker: chopped vegetables (carrots, fennel, celery), rosemary, sage, thyme, garlic, onion.
    -use in salads, soups, purees, braised (side dish)

There has been this ongoing argument about Nigerian sun and abroad sun, which one is hotter. I am about to give my two cents and I know some of you are already about to fight me (put it in the comments section). I was not the typical ajebo child in Nigeria, in fact I attended University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN (the only university in Nigeria by the way, argue with your Vice chancellor please!). A typical lion or lioness of the den knows that shuttle was only on your birthdays or whenever you were going to ogige market and had fifty naira to spare or even when you were taking a date to chitis and chose to be extra nice. The major means of transportation is your legedis-benz. If you went to high school in Lagos, around Ojo, Ajangbadi to be precised, bus or keke was overrated. Trekking was the deal, the real deal. My friends and I walked home from school every day, we even had a routine and we saved gist for the trekking sessions. We also had checkpoints where we stopped for breaks occasionally. Generally, as a Lagosian, you must have trekked at one point in your life because the only way to get out of some traffic jam was to get down from the bus and trek. I cannot forget getting stuck in Alaba market, from pm when the market would close. Ladies and gentlemen you either fight, push, jump into a moving keke or treck! Somedays there were no keke to jump sef.  Omo my legs could easily pass as your choicest possession in Nigeria. This goes to say that I trekked my fair share while in Nigeria.

Contrary to what my geography teacher taught me, Nigeria has only two seasons: hot and not hot. Not hot includes rain, harmattan, fog, wind, and whatever else you choose to add (be creative, LOL). Now the United States has four seasons, one of which is solely dedicated to hotness. It usually starts in June and ends in August or somewhere around that. I stay in Augusta Georgia and our weather does not follow the rules. Summer starts in April until somewhere in October or November.A good nice out summer is about seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit which is about twenty-three degrees Celsius. It gets as hot as one hundred-and-two degrees Fahrenheit and it usually comes with humidity! You know when they say someone entered hell and forgot to lock the gate, yea that type of heat along sides steam. My sister and I usually be like, “hell will be hot o, very hot” (give your life to Christ my dear, you do not want to suffer hell here and there too). I have the luxury of driving, so I am barely in the sun but I dey feel am just as much. In Nigeria, I never slept with the fan on no matter how hot but now, I sleep with the air conditioner on. Dem never even born me well to trek inside this sun, I go just melt straight! I never saw the use of sunscreen in Nigeria but now I bathe in sunscreen before stepping out to step into my car. I get the whole Nigeria is closer to the equator gist, but I think the whole earth has gone flat and we are all side by side to the darn thing. The popular saying that, “abroad weather is a skin care routine” applies only to winter. The abroad weather skin glow mostly comes from the security of knowing you have crossed over. When you start hustling it disappears but that is another discussion on its own. Do you know that the pool in this abroad is cool and calming for this first thirty minutes after which you are back to square one? I try to stay away from the pool because the bugs that come out in this summer ehn, they are new every season.

I hope with these few points of mine you can see my point; Nigeria is hot and so is the abroad. Regardless of how hot it is, I will pick summer all day every day. We spent a glorious 8 days at Caserio del Mirador in Jalon (or Xalo in Spanish). We have been itching to go back ever since we left! The kids still talk about this holiday every single day. This was unlike any other holidays we have been on before, keep reading to learn more about our unique experience.


GETTING THERE

Caserio del Mirador can be reached via Alicante or Valencia airport. Both airports are just over an hour drive away. We flew from Gatwick to Alicante Airport and it took just over 2 hours. Then we picked up our rental car at Alicante airport.

Word of warning, DO NOT ever use Goldcar for car rentals. It&#;s a long story but they are basically scammers and will try to get as much money off you as possible! Avoid, avoid, avoid!! I booked with them before reading the awful reviews online, it was an expensive lesson&#;.

The drive from Alicante airport to Caserio del Mirador was pretty straight forward, mostly motorways and straight roads until the last 10 minutes up the mountain. Expect some hairpin turns and slightly narrower roads.


CASERIO DEL MIRADOR

Founded by Sarah and Johnny in , together with their 3 children, they had established a place that cateres for young families. The idea is that families can travel, relax, be together and make memories.
There are lots of animals in the grounds and this was a highlight for our boys. From bunnies, to cats, to donkeys to ponies! Not forgetting Beryl the pig, who ate all our leftovers!


There are 5 apartments there (1 or 2 bedrooms), all with a fully equipped kitchen and either a terrace or a private balcony. Each apartment has a bathroom, most of them with showers, but a plastic bath tub can be provided for babies.


We stayed at the Carrasca, the largest apartment, with a double and a twin bedroom. The bedrooms have airconditionings, God-send in the heat! The view from the balcony is unreal! You can see miles and miles away through the mountains on a clear day.

All the apartments have a cot with beddings, changing mats, highchairs, plastic children tableware and cutlery, age-appropriate toys and books. You really don&#;t have to pack anything apart from clothes and nappies for the kids!


MEALS


Different to your typical all-inclusive hotels, meals are not included in the price for Caserio del Mirador. The kitchen is opened everyday apart from Mondays and Wednesdays.

You have the option to opt in and out of meals according to what suits your family each day. Kids tea is served around pm and it gives the kiddies a chance to sit together with other children and share a meal together (while the parents enjoy a glass of vino!)


Sarah usually prepares a lovely Mediterranean meal for lunch upon your arrival, which is exactly what you need after travelling with children. Dinner on the first night is brought to your terrace or balcony with a bottle of wine so you can relax in your own time and settle in. Just look at our dinner at our balcony! It was such a romantic setting.

I highly recommend Sunday paella lunch! Sarah&#;s son, Charlie, made us a mean paella meal!! I still dream about it to this day. We had paellas from restaurants during our trip and they were nothing compared to what we had at Caserio del Mirador.

We had a wonderful tapas meal on our last night there with our fellow campers. It was the most wonderful night! Perfect weather and perfect food, and we just spent time chatting and remembering the good times we had on the trip.

In terms of price, kids tea is €10 and adult meals ranges from € There is also an honestly bar where you can take canned drinks, ice-cream, teas and coffees. You just have to note it down in a book and the total is added to your final bill.

WHAT TO DO THERE


We are not usually the kind to go on holiday and stay in our hotel the whole time. We love to explore as a family, which we have done a lot of this year on our other trips. But we decided to stay in for most of the trip, mainly because Caserio del Mirador has everything to entertain the kids!


We spent most of our days lazing around in the pool (it was too hot to do anything else in the afternoons!). The kids also enjoyed the playgrounds, trampoline, feeding the animals and playing with their new friends. Caserio del Mirador is the kind of place where you can stay for the whole week, not leave, and not get bored!


We did visit the Moraira beach twice. It&#;s less than half an hour drive away and although it can get busy in the summer, it&#;s a really good shallow beach for kids. The ocean runs to the side of the beach, near the rocks, creating a little stream. There are also rocks pools for crab fishing if you wish. You can borrow beach gear like mats, umbrellas, beach toys from Caserio del Mirador when you go to the beach.

Jacob loved going to the rock pools with me to find crabs and fish. Word of caution, the rock pools can be very slippery and sharp! Make sure you have appropriate footwear. I was glad I wore my *Teva Hurricane XLT 2 to the beach. Not only are they comfortable, but they also have amazing grip, even in shallow water and slippery rocks! (* Affiliate)

We also explored Jalon a few times. There is a supermarket just 10 min drive down the hill from the villa, as well as cute lunch spots in town. There are markets few times a week. We went on Saturday morning and saw a huge antique market bustling.

OUR THOUGHTS

This place is amazing&#;! It is a very unique holiday experience, perfect for family with young children. Sarah and Johnny have thought of everything to lighten the stress of travelling for families.

The best part is being able to meet new people in the same life stages as you. It was amazing to be able to share struggles and triumphs in parenting together. Watching my boys make friends there will forever be my favourite memory and I am so thankful for the opportunity to witness this.

An important part of every voyage is getting some well-deserved rest. One of the cheapest and relatively comfortable options is Couchsurfing.

1. Creating profile

After you join the community on eunic-brussels.eu, you can sleep almost anywhere in the world for free. Almost. You are not required to pay (with money) but somehow help your host in return for his or her hospitality. You can bring a small souvenir from your country, cook a local dish, give your host guitar lessons, rehearse French with them or tell them all about your experience in hitchhiking around Europe. Or something else, beneficialand interesting to the host. It is not meant as a free bed for homeless people or someone on a business trip, trying to save money. You are actually required to fill in long online profile, make yourself sound interesting and friendly enough to get invited to people’s homes.

2. Getting reviews

After creating your profile, there is extra work to do. Most experienced hosts will have nothing to do with newbies without reviews and verifications. You might be a fake profile. And it is hard to get reviews without actually being hosted. Sort of catch But there are many couch surfing events, where you can meet the local community and network. Since in Slovenian culture, letting stranger in your home is a bit of a science fiction, there are maybe one or two meetups in 14 days. In the capital Ljubljana. Elsewhere closer to zero. But in Brussels or Amsterdam , numbers are much higher.

3. Where will I sleep?

We couch surfers are usually not very picky people. We sleep wherever, as long it is clean, warm and sheltered. As the name of the community tells you, you will most likely sleep on a couch in someone’s living room, but sometimes people let you use extra rooms or maybe only a corner of their dorm room where you can sleep on the floor in your sleeping bag. It is usually a good idea to read your hosts full profile, his likes and dislikes, house rules, what you get and what he expects in return. You might be allowed to use the kitchen or wash your clothes, or not. It depends on the person. It is not a hotel, so you are not automatically entitled to anything. Someone might except snake lovers only and you will share your room with his pets. Or expect you to share his love for metal music and go for a beer in his favourite biker bar downstairs. There might be a secret code hidden in the long description of his hobbies on his profile, and you have to use it in your mail to prove that you read and agree with the rules.

4. Benefits for hosts

I have usually hosted Couchsurfing backpackers or met them for a cup of coffee and chatted about local sights or gave them a tour around town centre. I met some really nice people, interesting and open, and learned from them. I can now cook two modernized Chinese dishes. And know how to hitchhike around Europe …. in theory. On community organized events I have explored hidden parts of Brussels in Belgium even most locals don’t know about. And we had really awesome night walk and home cooked dinner around Eindhoven in Netherlands during the light festival.

As a guest with Couchsurfing platform, I was never very successful. I don’t have the patience to contact the host early enough and plan my arrival to their town in advance. Since they are normal people with jobs or school I have to take in the account their working hours and availability to host. And, not every host will want to meet me. I might not be interesting enough, have wrong view on life or nationality.

5. Couchsurfing cons

There are also some creepy men, who will invite me just because I look moderately attractive or female on my profile pic. Or as my older and wiser friend once commented, because they need someone to chop to small pieces, and bury in the garden. The being chopped part can be usually avoided by reading reviews of someone’s former guests and checking his verifications and experience in advance.

6. Backup plans

You should always have a backup plan in case your host doesn’t show up or he does and you realize he isn’t as friendly and safe as advertised. In which case you can say sorry, I changed my mind, report him to Couchsurfing community and go sleep in to a hostel.

Hey there! I’m Angela and welcome to my little corner of the internet.

Girl in the Distance is my ongoing collection of travel stories, insights and reflections. As you can imagine, I love traveling (and I’m guessing you do too since you’re here! &#; or maybe you&#;re one of my friends or family that I&#;ve bullied into checking out my blog) and GITD is my way of archiving my destinations, planning my journeys and sharing the resources I’ve picked up through my travels.

I am a proud Canadian, born and raised and no matter which far flung corners of the globe I reach, Toronto will always be my original home. My family is Chinese but from Laos so we have a mixed heritage and culture.

I have always dreamed of traveling the world and traveling indefinitely. I use to work for an airline in which I wholly took advantage of flying all over North America and parts of Asia for next to nothing, but it was never enough. Even when I took my first month-long solo trip, I dreaded going home and going back to work.

So I put my butt into gear and saved as much as I could and collected as many travel points as I could and in January , I left my job (in which I had nearly 10 years seniority) to travel around the world.  Before this &#;big escape&#;, I have travelled quite a bit but I don&#;t feel like I&#;ve earned the &#;seasoned traveller&#; status just yet. Maybe it&#;ll never be enough.

Why should you read GITD when there&#;s a kajillion other travel blogs out there?

Well, I think I&#;m awesome so there&#;s the first reason.

Second, travel to me is not about cheap massages, tour groups or drinking yourself into oblivion.

Travel is aboutbecoming reconnected to the Earth and to humanity.

Traveling is observing the world in the most human way – before your eyes, in real time.

Traveling is allowing an unfamiliar place to enhance your senses. Traveling is getting to know the Earth, becoming closer to mother nature, breathing the air of a place thousands of miles away from your home, yet feeling alive as ever.

It is venturing into the unknown with wide eyes, an open mind and a humble heart.

And if you need a third reason, anything I post whether a picture or some words, I pour my heart into.
