Re: 2015 festivals!

Looks like Grand Haven, the Great Lakes Kite Festival 2015, is May 16 and 17. Here's a link to some photos I shot during the Great Lakes Kite Festival last weekend. Also, during the event, I broadcasted a Chicago Fire Kite Team performance live, using Twitter's "Periscope" app . I later p...

Re: Estimating # of Volunteers Needed?

I've emailed three people who were instrumental in starting a relatively young kite festival in Shipshewana, Indiana and encouraged them to log on here with any advice they have. It sounds like the event you're planning is of the same scale as their festival's first year.

Re: Indiana Dunes in August

Sounds like a plan then. What are a couple of kites i should aquire for the retreat? A Bring whatever you feel like flying. Group flying is done with Revolution 1.5s, but there are always extras of those on the sand (some people have rather large quivers and are extremely generous with their kites).

Re: Indiana Dunes in August

I got a for sure yes for the retreat and we are booking rooms tonight. I saw the Google calendar and it's full of things i want to do. I just wish wasn't 6 hours away from every event. I don't mind driving but my wife doesn't understand why i can't just go fly in a field by the house. I'm working o...

Re: Indiana Dunes in August

I plan on getting there early on August 1st or maybe the night before. I'll put up a quick fly announcement a little closer to that weekend. So are you hinting that I'm invited to the retreat? I can probably talk the wife into it. Do you have a structure to the retreat or is it more like a hangout ...

I just posted a link to this thread in the WKC FB group. Perhaps someone from there will respond to the OP.

Re: Can't use Richard's common nickname here

I think I'll leave censoring on, not because I'm concerned about being offended (I'm not offended that easily) but because I want to know how my messages will look to those users who leave it on. Had I previously turned censoring off, I would have never known that for some users, my message would ha...

Can't use Richard's common nickname here

I tried to refer to Richard Claycomb in a message in Rose's thread about building kites for kids. The forum software changed the four-letter nickname by which he prefers to be addressed (which is also slang for male anatomy) to the word, "disk." Is this part of the board's built-in anti-pr...

Re: Kid-Friendly Pattern

HKS uses a sled kite. Our members (mostly Terri and Richard Claycomb) cut the sails in advance out of the same material from which trash bags are made, but I've also seen them in Tyvek and grocery bags, so I assume something like white newsprint would also work. The other parts are two wooden dowel ...

Re: Looking for Kite Flying Demonstration at Event

This is the first festival I've seen that charges a fee. I take that back--I think the one Dieppe, Canada charged a fee. At "Kites 'n MPX" north of Cincy last Saturday, the park department charged anyone who didn't have a Metro Parks vehicle permit (available only to Butler County, Ohio r...

Re: Indy!

Mark's not talking about the 180Go! calendar, he's talking about the IKE calendar. I put festivals on there whether they are for 180Go! or not. OK. I don't monitor the IKE calendar for additions, either. What really interested me, however is that my :Logo180GO!: / :SLKani: friends will be in Indiana.

Re: Indy!

Actually, I don't monitor 180 Go's calendar for updates. The way I found out is when the Secretary of HKS accidentally discovered the Indy event and notified the rest of HKS via our Yahoo! group. Apparently, the host organization never contacted HKS, perhaps because they didn't know about us.

Jay, if you have ANY time we have flown here The track next to the forest preserve offices. Several of us have flown here. Surely it's on your way to the interstate. Thanks. We'll see what the weather looks like when I get out of the seminar at 3 p.m. CT. I'll have a four-hour drive home head of me...
