Here's Big Mike flying in colder weather than we have right now ... yes, that is a minus in front of the 20 degrees F. http://www.ikeclub.org/Forums/posted_images/user...

Re: Kite Fabric

... I thought Hang em High and Kitebuilder were no longer operating? Are they back online? ... No they are still off line. All I wanted to convey is where I've bought ripstop material in the past. I've also purchased kite building stuff from Sailrite, Goodwinds, Kites and Fun Things ... good result...

Re: Kite Fabric

If you are interested in buying Challenge or Contender material for a good price, drop me a PM and I'll share the contact info. He also has Texlon material. I haven't bought any ripstop from him, but he comes recommended by others who have purchased from him. Since it's not a business, he'd rather n...

Re: Kite Fabric

Goodwinds is one of the few places left where you can buy "one" yard of 60 inch material. They charge $10.99 per yard. They are a very professional company who also sell rods and tubes ... in fact, their parent company manufactures the rods and tubes. Sailrite is a source for 60 inch mater...

Re: IKE Fall Sewing Something Session?

Since I'm basically lazy, I've "borrowed" and modified Mike's list from our 2009 ROK class. What to bring: 1) Whatever you use to sew and any tips or hints you've got to share with the rest of us. 2) Sewing Machine, pedal, power cord and an extension cord for your machine!!! If you haven't...

Re: IKE Fall Sewing Something Session?

With "Hang Em High" and "Kitebuilder" out of business, the opportunity for a yard or so of individual ripstop colors has effectively dried up. Steve has offered to check with his local source for ripstop availability. Can we get a head count of who is planning on attending to hel...

Re: Everyone OK?

The tornado missed us ... again! A quarter mile away there are damaged homes ... a half mile away there are destroyed homes ... a mile away homes have simply disappeared. I count myself as very lucky. If you'd like to know a little more about what is going on at a community level and see a really go...

Re: IKE Fall Sewing Something Session?

... I'm pretty sure at least one other IKE member is interested in the full size mini . . . :) This is what I posted earlier: If folks want to do a foil, I could put together a class. I think a Mini-Mock (20 sq ft) might be too much for a single day. But, a Micro-Mock (5 sq ft), which is simply a q...

Re: IKE Fall Sewing Something Session?

Dumb question, but why not have them print it out full scale? Why half scale? The .pdf is of a Mini -Mock ... The Mini -Mock is 20 sq ft The Micro -Mock is 5 sq ft (all linear dimensions are half scale) Thus, printing the Mini -Mock .pdf drawings half size yields templates for a Micro -Mock. Cheers...

Re: IKE Fall Sewing Something Session?

DO you need to have copies of the layout made so everyone has a template? My sister and brother in law run a print shop so I could probably get copies made. Hey Mikey, thanks for the offer. I have a .pdf file for the Mini-Mock ... if it can be printed out half scale that might be good. I used the d...

Re: IKE Fall Sewing Something Session?

The Micro-Mock is simply a quarter scale Mini-Mock kite ... ie all linear dimensions are cut in half. The advantage of building a Micro-Mock is that it's inexpensive and quick to build. All knowledge acquired building it are directly transferable to building the Mini-Mock. I've built five or six Mic...

Re: IKE Fall Sewing Something Session?

Talked to Don Mock today and he gave us permission to build the Micro-Mock in our winter class. The material is a little hard to define ... too many opportunities for different colors in different areas on the kite. But here is a suggestion: 1) The bottom panel is made up of four pieces 8" by 2...

Re: IKE Fall Sewing Something Session?

We're traveling back to the Midwest right now. Let me have a little time to figure out the actual yardage for a Micro-Mock. I've been building the Micro-Mocks out of scraps, so have never done the actual calculations for total yardage. Kite Builder was a great place to order nylon from ... 1 yard mi...

Re: Anyone used a poster tube for kite airline travel?

... Now I just need an impromptu kite stake. :) Get Mikey to model one of his electronic cigarettes ... that would work as a stake. Stop at Big Lots and buy a 99 cent screwdriver. Stop at one of the big box lumber yards and buy a landscaping nail. Or a sporting goods store for a stake. Throw them a...

Re: Anyone used a poster tube for kite airline travel?

Check the carry on rules for the airline you're using ... check before each flight 'cuz the damn rules are always changing. I think changing the rules works to the airlines detriment. The check-in folks don't know nor care what you're bring on the plane. TSA doesn't care what baggage you're bring on...

Re: IKE Fall Sewing Something Session?

Jeepster, do want to teach something? You've done a ton of sewing since we've last done this. Maybe something like a mini-mock in IKE colors, fuzzy tail... If folks want to do a foil, I could put together a class. I think a Mini-Mock (20 sq ft) might be too much for a single day. But, a Micro-Mock ...

Re: Quad line sets

... besides 120', what length lines does everyone typically fly on? ... I'll start the conversation on length with my thoughts ... others may have different opinions: The 120 ft length is an almost universal length for team flying with several fliers and lots of room. After that, it starts to depen...

Re: Quad line sets

... don't worry about shanti vs. LPG. ... Not true. Cant speak for the new stuff, but the older (4 yrs ago) Shanti line has an open weave without a coating and it will lock up when team lines cross at an angle. Dual line fliers love it 'cuz it's pure spectra with no coating. But, dual line fliers d...
