AKA 2009 Convention Sponsorships

Interested in helping to stretch the dollars to have more fun at Rochester? Think about sponsoring not just trophies, but other items. It doesn't have to be lots of money to make an impact. Is there anyone who could donate $50-$2000 to help with the Monday night reception? How about $150 to sponsor ...

Flyers Needed In Lindenhurst IL

As regional director, I received this note. Of course, I immediately thought of IKE as probably having at least a few members in that area. Can anyone help out? Barbara We are planning our upcoming Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Lindenhurst Village Hall. One of the many act...

Re: It's Never Too Early To Think About MAKR

Before I forget, LOVE the count down to MAKR clock on the home page!
Time to get those registrations off in the mail. The instructors are starting to wonder how many kits they need to prepare.

Hope to see many of you this weekend in Two rivers.

Re: It's Never Too Early To Think About MAKR

The website has been updated, check out all the cool pictures. The registration form is posted, time to download and mail it in. some tough choices to make as to which class you want. Does IKE have a club kite? The Baden-Powell makes a great billboard. I bet Rob would do a sail in either white or re...

Re: Nominations Needed For Regional Director

Here's hoping someone from this group steps up and volunteers. As of yesterday, there have been 2 people nominated from our region, but neither has yet accepted. Those of you living in IL are best postioned to actually be able to visit events across the region, without taking out a loan to fill up t...

Re: Kite Making Question

Clear fabric? How about construction grade clear plastic held together with packing tape? For the graphic you could try using the Krylon spray paint for plastic (not translucent); find some purple plastic bags and (carefully) heat seal those onto the base; lots of purple sharpie or other alcholol ba...

Re: Un-completed, UNIQUENESS.

As a judge at nationals, I offer some advice. First, don't obsess over perfect stitiching. The judges would much rather see something unique where you have come up with an idea, solved problems and been successful, than any perfectly done piece that is just like every other one. Having judged mutipl...

Re: 2008: May 10, Kites Over Grinnell Iowa

Of course Chris and lots more are going to compete! Now, don't get all freaked out that it's a competition, and say, I'll be judged, I'm not going to Nationals, I can't do this!!! We are thinking of this as a dress rehearsal for next year, both for competitors and crew. This is the absolute first an...

Re: Kite Making Question

Great idea, but really hard to execute. I've been thinking of the same thing for some time. The problem is to support the curves and maintain the shape in all winds. If you have a lot of support than it is a flat kite and needs a tail to stabilize. If it is bowed for lift, how do you keep the form? ...

Re: Trading Cards

These are so cool. Several years ago they were all the rage. Lots of people had trading cards made.
So Mike, ya wanna trade? I still have some of mine, and willing to trade. Anyone else have a card to trade?

Note, 2 items covered in this post. First: Only 4 weeks to go. Registration is still open. Some classes are full, but no instructor has every seat filled. You know a fabulous time will be had. And, the very best place to connect with kiters from around the US. We even have folks driving up from Texa...

Kites will be fine if they can go in the overhead bin. Some have reported problems with spools of flying line not being allowed past security.

75th Birthday

Next week, on January 21, Charlie Sotich is celebrating his 75th birthday. He has been a strong supporter of kiters and kiting for a long time. His donations of mini kites have raised thousands of dollars for the AKA, and clubs around the world. He has been the backbone of MAKR since day 1, and has ...

Re: MAKR 2008

After an initial flurry, the mailbox is not filling quite as quickly. Several of you who have said you are coming, still haven't gotten that envelope in the mail. None of the classes, well except for the boomerangs, are totally full yet, but several are close to filling a particular session. If ther...

Re: MAKR 2008

Thanks to all who sent their registration forms in already. I have been pleasantly surprised at how many have already registered. Way more than normal. Two years ago at the Color the Wind festival in Clear Lake IA. (Fabulous festival, you should come.) The day started at an actual temperature of 10 below, and the high was 2 below.
