Re: I KNOW--the forum has changed!

Hey Mike, thanks for the update to the forum ... lots of work I know. Here's a few of thoughts: 1) I'm on a kite forum that does auto-resizing of photos ... since it's much easier for folks to post photos it seems like there are more posted! Which is a good thing. 2) Hosting your photos on another w...

Re: Have an idea, need a price quote...

The legal copyright infringement comes into play if you sell your product ... or derive a monetary reward. Until that time, you are free to reproduce with no repercussions. I went through the entire process when I made some Crayola crayon tails. Their legal department shared the ground rules with me...

Re: Kite line weight selection

... I'm curious what Jeepster will have to say too. The rule of thumb sizing of line that Mike quoted is a good starting point ... good WAG might be an appropriate description. As Steve pointed out, the final tuning has to be based on the specific kite you're flying. I've got a 70 sq ft flow form t...

Re: Quad Line Length

Ah ha, the thumb length vs arm length turned on the light bulb. Had to do it ... measured thumb length and compared it to the eyeball-to-thumb dimension. Turns out it IS approximately 1 to 10. Thanks!

Of course it's not exact, but a tattooed line on my thumb will tighten up the accuracy!

Re: Quad Line Length

As long as we're doing rules of thumb, here's a rule that uses your thumb: Sight along your outstretched arm with your thumb up, like painters in cartoons do. The building or other wind obstruction should be smaller than your thumb. So, does that mean that Big Mike has to be further away than others?

Re: Quad Line Length

Jeff, a couple of small things. Since you're space limited, the rule of thumb is 100 ft from obstructions for every ten feet of height (give or take a few). The wind needs space to smooth out after going around or over trees/houses/hills/etc. Revs can accommodate that some, but smoother wind is bet...

Re: ripstop polyester vs ripstop nylon

I'll simply echo what Mike says about the two different fabrics ... his input is spot on. One extra consideration is to not mix the two fabrics on a kite. Their characteristics are just enough different that you run the risk of creating an imbalance in the kite. Stay away from light weigh fabrics fo...

Re: Another Empty Space in the Sky - RIP Ron Despojado

... Nobody turned a smoother bicycle spin than Ron. He wasn't fast and flashy, just so darn precise all the time. Nice guy, great flyer. And that was with a full sail in 20+ winds. Never could understand how he could be so smooth and precise with all the "wrong" equipment. I once told him...

Yes but ... I've seen you driving about in a mommy van which just drips of maturity ... Big Mike, and his truck to haul kites in, is nothing if not rational and mature ... and now Mikey has bought a sedan. Luckily my Jeep helps to counterbalance the geriatric trend.

Re: Hello from West Central Illinois

Hey Robbie, welcome to the club. Robbie, I've got to be honest with you ... just drop the kite string and run. Run as fast and far away as you can. It's probably the cold weather or a mid-life crises (60 is the new age for mid-life panics) that has you thinking about kiting. So, fair warning, turn y...

Sorry, will be unable to attend. Just returned from six weeks out in the Southwest and now going through temperature decompression. Going from 90s to 30s in one week is painful.

Re: Just one more Rev (I think)

A better bet is to ask Big Mike to check with Lolly. You might also check with Dave at Kite Connection ... he had a barrel (literally) of odd new kites at Kite Party this year. I bought a mid-vent for my son in black and red ... can't remember if it was a B-series or the style you fly. Cheers, Tom

Re: Team Flying Clinic?

I live in the middle of nowhere ... literally. Mike is about 130 miles away, Big Mike is 80 miles away, and James Patten used to live 100 miles in the opposite direction. Thus, I fly Revs by myself most of the time. About a month or so after buying my first Rev I went to a club fly ... only owned a ...
